I appreciate the work of of Dr. Steven Porges’ – Anxiety and the Polyvagal Theory, especially during times when anxiety builds to a state of dis-regulation and often insomnia. This theory highlights how our autonomic nervous system, particularly the sympathetic nervous system, plays a crucial role in our stress responses. I realized that when I feel emotionally overwhelmed and anxious, my body enters fight-or-flight mode, making it near impossible to relax or sleep. The heart races, adrenaline rushes, the breath becomes shallow, leaving us restless at night and beyond…
Understanding this somatic connection and listening to the body is ultimately the key to recovery. I learned that the sympathetic nervous system is not just a source of anxiety but a signal that something inside needs attention, self-love and care. By recognizing this, we can start to practice body-based (somatic) techniques like deep breathing and mindfulness, which helps shifts our nervous system from that hyper-arousal state to the parasympathetic, where one is calm and safe.
Over time, I noticed significant improvements in my sleep patterns and overall well-being. It is helpful to realize that the body was trying to protect us, and by listening to the nervous system, we can find a path toward better sleep and self-regulation. Now, I feel more in control, allowing me to embrace peaceful nights and face most every day with renewed energy! Please listen to my personal recovery experience and some somatic whole-person tips to come back into balance and wellness.
